Tiger Tilapia
African Cichlids | Visited 899 Times

This species inhabits fresh and brackish waters over its native and non-native range. Spotted tilapia do not tolerate cold waters well. Tilapia are biparental, substrate brooders. They are aggressive, especially towards conspecifics during spawning. The annual breeding cycle of spotted tilapia is not known from their native range, however, they are believed to breed throughout the year with seasonal peaks in the spring and fall.
They have also been reported to breed throughout the year in Florida. Males burrow quite a bit in preparation for spawning, and nests are frequently built under rocks. Up to 2000 eggs are laid per nest. Egg coloration is turquoise.
